Bio:My journey toward representing youth and people with disabilities began at an early age. While in high school, I worked as a summer camp counselor and helped form a group called Transformed, whose mission was to engage other youth in the process of transforming our community. Our relatively quiet town had recently experienced a surge of crime and violence. Our group wanted to play a role in returning it to the safe, family-friendly community with which we were familiar as younger children. During this time, I developed an increased sense of passion and commitment for the world around me. Before I had ever even heard of Margaret Mead, I became convinced that a small group of people truly could change the world as long as they maintained unity and a commitment to the cause.I carried this passion with me to college, and soon after I started my freshman year at Mercer University, I began volunteering at the Power House Youth Center, a faith-based after-school program for West Macon youth. At the Power House, our mission was to provide a Christian atmosphere of caring adults to love and mentor the youth who entered our doors. We did that very well. However, I quickly learned that our youth brought along issues that were beyond the scope of what our center could provide. Several of our youth were involved with gangs or had otherwise been in trouble with the law. Some of the youth were homeless, and others were entangled in the child welfare system.
