Bio:John Aubrey Chauncey Cartner was born into a maritime and naval family of New England and the Carolinas. He traces his line to, among others, a merchant and ship-owner in Genoa in the 15th century, a sixteenth century English privateer, English traders and merchants of the seventeenth through twentieth centuries and Royal and U.S. naval officers. He was the late Congressmen Herbert C. Bonner's (D-NC, Chairman of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee) principal appointee to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1965. Following the Academy in 1969, Mr. Cartner served as an officer at sea in Southeast Asian waters on tank and ammunition vessels and later on the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans on tank and container ships. He was appointed to his first ocean deep draft command in 1976. He founded and chaired for ten years a naval architectural and marine engineering company in Alexandria, Virginia. He served as a Director of the Kings Point Fund and was honored by the Academy in 1984 with the Alumni Outstanding Professional Achievement Award. In 1998, he was honored by the Academy by having a classroom named for him. In 1989, with the Virginia firm he was responsible under contract as a principal for the U.S. Navy's efforts in the EXXON VALDEZ cleanup and under a parallel contract the company operated the Navy's salvage depots in the United States (Stockton, CA; Pearl Harbor, HI; Williamsburg, VA); Yokohama, Bahrain, Livorno and Singapore.
