She attended the University of Denver for her undergraduate work, where she was elected as a junior to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude with a triple major in biology, German, and political science and a minor in chemistry. She is a Fulbright Scholar and studied medicine in Heidelberg, Germany. Ms. Burns was awarded the Junius L. Allison Legal Aid Award for achievement in public interest work in law school.
