- Highly Dissatisfied! - - Mark Slotkin - 8/17/2015 - flag as inappropriate - comment
I am highly dissatisfied with the experience I had with attorney Craig Fields of Glickfeld, Fields, & Jacobson in Los Angeles. In September, 2010, I retained Mr. Fields to represent me in a divorce proceeding and represented to me that he was an experienced Family Law attorney. Mr. Fields is in fact, NOT a certified Family Law attorney and misguided me as to how to proceed with my case. Certification requires special classes and milestones. Family Law has an entirely different set of rules than normal civil law. Mr. Fields was unaware of the vast differences in the way the law is administered, thus causing a long delay in case closure. Yet, he claimed to be an expert in Family Law; nothing could be further from the truth. My wife asked for a restraining order and filed a domestic violence civil action against me in divorce court. Since he did not have family law experience, he did not know that a domestic violence matter takes precedence over all matters, and the divorce proceedings would remain on hold until the domestic violence issue was resolved. Mr. Fields advice created an exorbitant amount of unnecessary attorney's fees and my case was on hold for over 2 years. The simple resolution would have been to stipulate to the restraining order and the divorce action could have moved forward. The restraining order was civil, not criminal, and would have no effect on my life style as I have had little communication with my wife. Approximately 4 months after hiring Mr. Fields, we had a dispute over his outrageous legal fees which caused me to seek new representation. It is my opinion Mr. Fields "churned" his legal bills, charged me for additional hours for work not performed, and overcharged on his alleged time spent on my case. In the 4 months that he represented me, my legal bills were over $140K NOT counting the $30,000 + that I already paid him. I had a premarital agreement (PNA), for which we had trial dates set in July, 2011. Those dates were used up on the domestic violence action and it was not until two years later that I eventually got new trial dates. Ultimately the PNA was upheld and validated as 100% enforceable. Mr. Fields did not represent me in this phase, nor would he have been capable of doing so, considering his skill set. Four and a-half years after we parted ways, Mr. Fields decided to file a lawsuit against me seeking payment for his bills, which I have refused to pay. It is my opinion that Mr. Fields waited this long in order for the statute of limitations to expire that bars me from countersuing for fraud, misrepresentation, and legal malpractice. I requested that a jury decide on Mr. Field's action and he vehemently opposed it, forcing me to make three trips down to court before my motion was approved. Fields will need a 10-2 vote to win; I think they will see it my way. I am representing myself but I'm not a walk over by any means, although he has hired collection attorneys to represent him. His attorneys are very good at harassment. They have repeatedly served numerous discovery requests that are spurious and overbearing at best. They have doggedly pursued every possible course to make it difficult for me. Right makes might, Fields thinks the opposite.
