Rick was born in Bryant, Arkansas, and came to Acadiana in 1973, to attend the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Rick graduated from USL in 1977, and worked locally for several years. He attended the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center and received his Juris Doctor in 1984. Rick first practiced law in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and, in 1986, joined a firm in Opelousas, practicing in its bankruptcy department. In September of 1995, Rick formed 'D. Patrick Keating, APLC' and practiced law as a sole practitioner in Opelousas, with an emphasis on bankruptcy matters. In October of 2010, he moved his office to Lafayette and formed “The Keating Firm, APLC” to continue his bankruptcy law practice.
