Bio:Mark Kleinschmidt joined the firm in 2012 after serving six years as the Executive Director of the Fair Trial Initiative where he recruited and mentored young attorneys in their development towards becoming practicing capital trial lawyers and represented indigent clients facing possible execution. From 2000 to 2006 he was a staff attorney at the Center for Death Penalty Litigation. Mark's work representing exonerated North Carolina death row inmate, Levon Jones, is featured in John Temple's book, The Last Lawyer. He is a regular faculty member at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy Southeastern Regional Program. Mark also formerly served on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina affiliate of the ACLU, acting as President from 2008 to 2009. After 8 years of service on the Chapel Hill Town Council, Mark was elected Mayor of Chapel Hill in 2009, North Carolina, and reelected in 2011. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mark served as a high school teacher at West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1997.
