He attended public schools and was junior class president, senior class vice-president, and valedictorian of his class (of approximately 500 students) at Portland High School. He was also captain of the debating team that won the state championships in both of those years; David was twice selected the best debater in the state. Thanks to multiple scholarships, David attended Amherst College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. In the winter of his senior year, he was a finalist in the Rhodes Scholarship competition. Six months later, he graduated from Amherst, summa cum laude. Three years later, he graduated from Harvard law School. David immediately returned to Portland and opened his own law office. For the next forty-five years, David practiced mostly alone, handling a wide variety of cases and representing hundreds, perhaps even thousands of clients. Many of those clients were and are friends and acquaintances of David and his family; some, the children and grand-children of folks who patronized the Downtown clothing store owned and operated by David's father and grand-father.
