Beware! I just finished a closing with Mr. Hyer and it was like no other closing I have ever participated in. (And there have been many) Mr. Hyer, insisted the BUYER bring 14 Bank checks to the closing. Instead of using the Escrow account to write checks to all the various parties involved which is standard, he made the BUYER cut all the checks out of the balance due at closing. When asked by the Buyer's attorney to please be more reasonable and reduce the number of checks required. His response was "Does your client want to close?". When asked to split the cost of the excessive number of certified checks with the Buyer, his response was "I will not agree to a charge that the seller is never responsible for." They asked the buyer to cut individual certified checks to each of the seller's attorneys for closing, additionally since they were going through divorce, he requested additional certified checks cut to the same attorneys but this time for the matrimonial fees associated with his clients. The duplication of checks continues, including one request for a certified check for $3.25 when an additional certified check was also requested to the same party for some hundreds of dollars. Mr. Hyer pushed off, what objectively should have been his job, and instead made it the BUYERS problem to go to the bank and wait their over an hour and produce bank checks which clearly he could have cut from the Escrow account. Since Mr. Hyer decided to share with BUYER details like the divorce attorney fees with all PARTIES, It's worth noting that he charged 1.5x as much money as the other divorce/closing attorney. The facts speak volumes about Mr. Hyer and how he treats clients, other attorneys and counter-parties in general. The BUYER should never be responsible or drawn in to the petty squabbles of two SELLER's going through a divorce. That is why we hire attorneys in the first place, is it not? To protect and insulate ourselves from the petty minutia. Mr. Hyer choose to open up details about his clients divorced and involve the BUYER, in so much as he insisted we cut the checks for their matrimonial fees, in the midst of the SELLER's divorce. I hope someone finds this review helpful. Who represents you in legal areas is a very important decision, do not make it lightly.
